The Story

Part of a
Larger Legacy

Mr. Dennis Jacob Berry is a 5th-generation descendant of Rev. Jacob Fontaine, one of Austin's most influential Black leaders. Through art, media, community events, and historical preservation projects, Dennis is working to keep his ancestor's legacy alive. Rev. Jacob Fontaine founded Austin's first Black-owned newspaper, The Gold Dollar, established multiple churches throughout Central Texas, and was a champion for education, civic engagement, and the advancement of the Black community. Today, Dennis continues that mission by educating, inspiring, and connecting people to Austin's rich cultural history.

History is full of names that deserve more than a footnote. This page is a place to honor one of them — to ensure that Dennis Jacob Berry is told alongside the larger legacy it belongs to.
